What Secret?

July 24, 2008

I tried to watch The Secret this past weekend and I could not finish it. Now before you get in my face about not giving it a chance, hear me out. I downloaded it with an excited spirit because I loved the trailer. I love the time period so was looking forward to a good movie. When it started and all it was was people talking about this ’secret’, I was still not discouraged because I liked how they made things flow. What deterred me is the message altogether.
No matter what way they tried to spin it, it kept coming back to the fact that you have to change your actions in order to change your life. They kept trying to say it was your thinking that you needed to change, but this just is not so. How can they say that when in the next breath they would also concede that it was a change of the way you reacted to things that could change your whole life.

It makes sense too. I know that when people are nice to me, I am nice to them. And when people are mean to me, I am mean to them. Do unto others…

Yet this movie wants to have you think that it is because you change your way of thinking, you have changed the cosmos. But what else does it tell you to do? Not just change your thinking…but your actions. It is this that is really key, not the change in thinking. SURE, you usually cannot change your actions without changing how you think about things, but why focus on the garbage that the though is what changes the world when it is actually the actions??

Anyone who has ever been in a relationship knows what ideas can do to people; if you get it in your head that your partner is cheating on you, you can let those ideas fester into something that is not healthy at all. But turn those thoughts around and you act differently towards your partner, right?

Of course I do not believe that our thoughts have the ability to change the cosmos; does this mean I will not get what I want in life? No, because I believe if I want something, I need to act to get it. And since I do, I will. Think about it: all talk with no action, leads to what?
